On Monday, May 4, 2015 at noon, the famous, old-school classic casino--The Riviera--closed its doors. I started filming around 11:55. It was a generally somber mood. The table games were already shut down. Some people were still playing slots. At noon an announcement was made saying they were closed and asking everyone to leave. It was drowned out by the noise of the crowd. At this point most of the few hundred people gathered there began applauding. Then, after about 5-10 minutes security started moving everyone out the back door. This was one of the last of the classic, "Rat Pack" casinos. Only the Flamingo still remains. In a town that is always upgrading and looking for the newest, best, biggest thing, the classic places are slowly dying off. But this place used to be one of the hot spots in town and was featured in so many movies (way more than I would have guessed) from a few 50s television episodes, to the original Oceans 11 in 1960, an episode of Quincy, the 1995 movie Casino, Showgirls, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Go, Austin Powers Man of Mystery, and 21. And with all those movies came stars like Robert De Niro, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Sean Connery, Sharon Stone, Johnny Depp, and Kevin Spacy. No other current place can even compare to that. It's sad to see it go, but as I mentioned, that's Vegas--always making way for the next best thing.
