CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A local woman with a rare syndrome is inviting people to Skate for Awareness. She's hosting the event at the Skating Place in White Oak to help people learn more about Behcet's disease. It's been a few months but Deana Clark is finally on a roll back to good health. Deana said, With Behcet's there's no one test that says like you have this. Deana was diagnosed with Behcet's, named after the doctor who discovered it, more than a decade ago. It's a syndrome, or collection of symptoms, caused by an inflammation in the blood vessels throughout the body. Dr. Huxley Miller told Local 12 it is characterized by, Three things; you have sores in your mouth, sores in the genital area and then it's a systemic, anti-inflammatory disease so that the eyes can also be involved. Deana had a flare up recently and had to have medications to manage not just these symptoms, But I also have like gastro problems, stomach ulcers and arthritis. She's finally strong enough again she said to share her passion for skating with her friends and her husband, Brandon. Brandon said, Me and her, we both met at skating. We actually met here at the Skating Place so it's like a weird kind of connection. Met and got married so it's only fitting the two would meet back up with friends there to host a benefit for the American Behcet's Disease Association she calls Skate for Awareness. Her goal is simply to raise awareness of a disease that some people know they have but others don't. She says the symptoms can be difficult to diagnose. Deana spent a lot of time getting her own diagnosis and now wants others to know early warning signs. In addition, she wants others to know they can live and manage the disease and have a rockin and rolling good time. Brandon said, It gives spotlight on her disease as well as roller skating. Deana said she started the event for her own condition but hopes someday to help others who also struggle with rare health problems nobody knows about, If next year I wanted to add somebody else to it to bring awareness to that one, it's not just about me, its about all of us.
