This video marks the debut of the California Soil and Water channel. This channel is dedicated to explaining agronomic principles related to crops grown throughout California, breaking down important concepts into clear, practical lessons. In this first episode, we focus on soil texture in the San Joaquin Valley; how these soils were formed geologically, and how Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) can be used to estimate general soil texture. Future videos will cover a wide range of agronomic terms and topics, always using real California examples and keeping each episode short and to the point. Richard Mead is a retired agronomist with over 40 years of experience. His passion is teaching agronomy to anyone who shares that interest — and helping support the long-term sustainability of California agriculture. Please note - this is my first video and mistakes will be made occasionally. For instance, there is a glaring typo on the CEC chart whereby the term Sandy Sand should have been Sandy Loam. I'll also address and correct this in the next video regarding soil pH.
