I never planned to visit Abruzzo, Italy — I just showed up. After a few laid-back days on the beach in Silvi, the noise of construction (and the lure of a hilltop town I’d never heard of) pushed me inland to Chieti. But getting there? Not so simple. Confusing train and bus schedules, figuring out where I could actually walk on the Italian Route 1 meets Route 66, and sizely portions of Italian food were just the beginning. Eventually, I made it to one of Italy’s most overlooked hill towns… and I'll just say, it's completely crazy that nobody visits Chieti, with its vast ancient history, insane views, and unique vibe.
