www.milaneyecenter.com | Dr. Milan Patel | 678.381.2020 | Atlanta, Georgia As one of the best cataract surgeons in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Patel explains the lens options available to patients after their cataract surgery. Cataracts are the clouding of the crystalline lens within your eye. Cataract surgery involves removing the lens and setting a new lens in its place. Lens option can be complex and sometimes overwhelming for somebody who's not aware of all of the possibilities after cataract surgery. There are four standard options: The monofocal lens implant is a lens with a single focus. Patients who choose a monofocal lens receive good distance vision. Typically, these patients only need reading glasses after surgery. A small minority of monfocal lens patients may need bifocal lenses to help them see distance and up close. Monfocal lenses are covered by most insurance plans and Medicare as part of your cataract surgery. The second option is astigmatism correcting lens which is really more pertinent to those patients who have astigmatism before cataract surgery. Astigmatism is when your eye is shaped a little bit more steeply in one direction than it is in the other direction. The toric lens implant has an inherent curvature that neutralizes your own astigmatism. And by using a toric intraocular lens, you will see better at distance and you may only need glasses for reading. This is revolutionary because most patients who have astigmatism are used to having to wear glasses for many years. Now with toric lenses, they have an opportunity to be glasses free for distance. The third option which many patients are now becoming more aware of and excited about is the option of a multifocal lens. It allows patients to see distance as well as up close with little to no need for glasses. The rings within the lens have different focal points. So you can see distance, looking any direction, and you can see near while looking in any direction. Once your prescription is set with a multifocal lens it tends to stay that way for the rest of your life. If you had to wear glasses prior to cataract surgery and you would like to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses after cataract surgery, the multifocal lens is the best option. The forth option is monovision. Those patients who are used to wearing contact lenses with one eye corrected for near and one eye corrected for distance have the option of creating monovision after cataract surgery. We can insert lens implants that allow you to have one eye corrected for distance after cataract surgery and have the other eye corrected for near after cataract surgery. Therefore, you would be allowed to see both distance and up close with no or little need for glasses. The trade-off is that you would have reduced depth perception than your counterparts who have glasses or the multifocal lens.
