In this neurologic disorder, the trigeminal nerve is compressed by one or more blood vessels( or other reasons) and this leads to abnormal sensation perception on face. Trigeminal Neuralgia is a disease where the fifth nerve is affected, and is considered a nerve hyperactivity disorder. The patient often experiences shock sensation on face, and this could be triggered by touching, brushing , shaving, talking, eating etc. the shock feeling in face starts after these triggers, is short lived and goes away after some time. Patinets often describe this disease as face nerve pain problem which is short-lived and is initially responsive to medicines like Tegretol, Mazetol, Gabapenting. These medicines used for treatment of Trigeminal neuralgia are anticonvulsants and MUST be taken ONLY under medical supervision.
