Interested in starting your own small engine repair business? Check out my other channel, where I share tips on building a repair company from scratch with minimal investment@SmallEngineEdge1 Is your Cub Cadet push mower popping out of the intake or exhaust and refusing to stay running? In this video, I walk you through a full valve train diagnosis and repair on a common Powermore 5X65MU engine. This engine is used on many popular push mower brands built by MTD—including Bolens, Craftsman, Murray, Huskee, White Outdoor, Yard Machines, Troy-Bilt, Yard-Man, and Cub Cadet This mower was backfiring, sputtering, and dying shortly after starting—classic signs of a valve timing or valve train issue. I show in this video how to go step-by-step through: Removing the valve cover and inspecting the push rods, rocker arms, and valves Checking for a loose rocker arm stud Properly adjusting valve lash/clearance to factory specs Diagnosing popping from the intake and exhaust Identifying the real cause behind rough running and poor performance The fix? A loose rocker stud causing improper valve movement. After securing it and adjusting both valves correctly, the mower fired right up and ran smooth. I also show how to adjust the engine throttle RPM/speed to ensure consistent cutting power and long-term reliability. If you're working on any push mower with a Powermore engine, this guide can save you hours of frustration and unnecessary part replacements. These engines are common across a wide range of MTD-built machines, and this fix applies to all of them.
