I went to the movie theater this weekend. Now, at this time, there is a Marvel film playing, a Stephen King horror, Gundam, six other smaller scale films, and Mickey 17; the Robert Pattinson sci-fi film from Oscar-winning director Bong-Joon-ho. And as we were pulling into the parking lot to go see this sci-fi film, I noticed that the parking lot was empty. There was no one there. And it dawned on me; a revelation. There are films playing in the theaters, and yet, no one is going to see them. Sure, movies are expensive. And the theaters are gross. But more over, people have lost faith in the movies; and further than that people have lost trust in the entire entertainment industry. It’s not just movies. It’s games too. It’s television too. People like you and I have lost trust that entertainment companies will entertain. We’ve lost trust that our investment into these products will be satisfying and that they won’t be insulting. We look to games and movies for escapism; not to be lectured by some hackneyed writer. So on the drive home from the theater, I had another epiphany. Not only have they lost your trust.
