One Day in Riga | Latvia - Baltic Sea with Helsinki | Mein Schiff 6 in July 2023

Today I explore Riga, UNESCO World Heritage Site and capital of Latvia. Art Nouveau Quarter and Old Town. Panoramic view from St. Peter's Church, boat trip and market hall. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its Art Nouveau district with countless beautiful buildings in this architectural style. But the old town is also really worth seeing. Many of them are beautifully restored. You can get a great overview from the steeple of St. Peter's Church, which you can reach by elevator. But also the market hall in the former largest Zeppelin shipyard is worth a visit. Riga was founded in 1201 by the German missionary bishop Albert von Buxthoeven together with a merchant retinue from Bremen. The city joined the Hanseatic League early on, but was repeatedly exposed to conquest due to economic successes and also its strategically favorable location. The threat from neighboring Russia led to an alliance with Poland-Lithuania at the end of the 16th century. Around 1620, the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf conquered the city in the course of the Reformation and suddenly Riga was the second largest Swedish city at that time. This came to an end in 1721 and the overpowering Russians forced the Swedes to cede Riga. In and after the turmoil of the First World War, an independent Latvian state actually emerged. At that time there were more than 40,000 ethnic Germans living in the city. They were forcibly resettled when the Soviet Union annexed the Baltic States in accordance with the Hitler-Stalin Pact in the run-up to the Second World War. German troops occupied Riga again between 1941 and 44. At the end of 1944, with the recapture of Riga by the Red Army, Latvia's role as a Soviet republic began, lasting until 1990. In 1991 Latvia officially became independent again. This video is part of the tour "Baltic Sea with Helsinki", on which we have been traveling with Mein Schiff 6 in July 2023. The trip leads from Kiel via Gdansk, Klaipėda, Visby, Riga, Helsinki, Tallinn and Stockholm back to Kiel. A really great tour.
