Gemas is a small town in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Famous for it's old railway station which served as a hub between the East & West coast lines operated originally by the Federated Malay States Railway (FMSR) then by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM). Nearby the Kelamah River was a site that saw heavy fighting during WWII. This was where the Battle of Gemas was fought between the invading Imperial Japanese Army and the Australian Army of AIF. It was a successful ambush that delayed the Japanese advance through Peninsula Malaya. Enough so that other forces were able to regroup and form a defensive posture. It was in part of the larger Battle of Muar. Eventually, the British forces withdrew to Singapore where eventual surrender led to the Fall of Malaya during WWII. Sadly, most people these days simply drive past this site without giving it much thought. A memorial stands there in honour of the men of the 2/30th Battalion AIF that gave their lives defending the lines and the hundreds of Japanese soldiers that died trying to capture it. The remnants of the bridge can still be seen today although we don't know for how long. "Lest We Forget" is engraved on the memorial.
