Orphaned at the age of ten, he moved in with his older brother Johann Christoph Bach, who continued his musical education. From an early age, Bach demonstrated exceptional skill as an organist and a deep understanding of composition rooted in the rich traditions of German sacred music. Throughout his career, Bach held several important musical positions, including posts in Weimar, Köthen, and later Leipzig, where he served as Thomaskantor at St. Thomas Church. During these years, he composed an extraordinary body of work, including cantatas, passions, organ compositions, chamber music, and orchestral suites. Among his most celebrated works are the Brandenburg Concertos, the Mass in B minor, the St Matthew Passion, and The Well-Tempered Clavier. Bach’s music is renowned for its structural mastery, intricate counterpoint, and profound spiritual depth. Although he was highly respected as an organist during his lifetime, his broader recognition as one of the greatest composers in Western music history grew significantly after his death. He died in Leipzig in July 1750 at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy that became the foundation of Baroque music and a cornerstone of classical tradition.
