A playthrough of U.S. Gold's 1993 license-based action game for the Sega Master System, Star Wars. Played on the Jedi level. Star Wars, Tiertex's PAL-exclusive Master System port of the 1991 NES game ( • Star Wars (NES) Playthrough ), was released in Europe, Australia, and Brazil in late 1993. The reworked Game Gear version, which also saw a North American release, came out around the same time. In terms of content, the Master System game is a faithful retread of the NES original. The stage layouts, enemy placements, and cutscenes are virtually identical. The graphics have been touched up to take advantage of the Master System's larger color palette. The backdrops are less monochromatic, better detailed, and look great, even if the changes sometimes make it difficult to distinguish between the background and foreground elements. The music has been nicely adapted, and though it lacks the punch of the NES game's audio, some of it sounds quite good for the Master System. Unfortunately, the gameplay lands on a broken ankle. The platforming feels far clunkier due to the looser controls, floatier jumps, and occasionally harsh bouts of slowdown. The blaster is less effective - the rate of fire has been lowered, and you can't have more than three shots on screen at once - so enemies are more likely to run into you before you can finish them off. And finally, no accommodations were made for the Master System's lower screen resolution (256x192 versus the NES's 256x224), resulting in a vertically-cropped playfield that obscures hazards above and below you. This version offers two difficulty levels - Cadet and Jedi - but the choice doesn't meaningfully mitigate any of these issues. Jedi mode is significantly more difficult and frustrating than the (already) challenging NES version, while Cadet mode trivializes things by disabling fall damage, buffing your blaster's damage output, reducing the damage you take from enemies and hazards, and spawning fewer enemies. I enjoyed Star Wars on the NES, but I can't recommend the Master System port. It looks nice, but it's an inherently worse game in every other way. _____________ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
