The coast was rocked by an unprecedented 16 shark attacks in under two years, nearly three times more than average. The bloodbath leads scientists and state officials to wonder what’s happening — and when the sharks will strike next. Gulf Coast Killers The Gulf of Mexico is home to over 49 species of sharks, and it’s not uncommon for locals and tourists to spot one swimming along the coast. More often than not, these usually docile creatures stay away from humans. But in 2005, shark attacks along the Gulf of Mexico exploded, five times more than the average. Cape Jaws With 600 sightings and four attacks, the peaceful tourist destination of Cape Cod suddenly becomes a hotspot for terrifying shark encounters. Nightmare Island The Bahamas is a nation of 700 islands with some of the most biodiverse marine life in the world. Despite being home to 40 species of shark, attacks on humans are unusual…until 2002. What caused this increase that left 36 people maimed or dead? Carolina Chaos In 2015, the family vacation hotspot along the Carolina coast became a shark attack hell.
