Wine Review: Koehler Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese Trocken 2019

In the third of three videos tasting Koehler-Ruprecht's Trocken Rieslings from their highly reputed Kallstadter Saumagen vineyard, our Wine Director, David Allen Master of Wine tastes an Auslese trocken from 2019 - compare this tasting with the previous videos from our YouTube channel where he tastes the Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Kabinett Trocken 2020 and then the 2020 Riesling Spatlese Trocken from this same vineyard. Weingut Koehler Ruprecht is one of the oldest wine estates in the Pfalz wine region of Germany. It is best known for its age-worthy Riesling white wines. White wines are also made from Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Scheurebe. Red wines are made from Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). Biodynamic practices are used in the vineyards The wines undergo long spontaneous fermentations in large old barrels with extended lees contact. Sulfur is added in moderate quantities after alcoholic fermentation and before bottling. The estate has 10.5 hectares (26 acres) of vineyard holdings (half of which are devoted to Riesling) are located around the city of Kallstadt, with the wine labels of single-vineyard releases featuring the "Kallstadter" designation.
