Historian John Carmody of the Oneida Carry Research Group, discusses the British fort known as Fort Rickey at the Oneida County History Center. While many recognize Fort Rickey as the site of a Discovery Zoo, few are aware that it was a real military fort. Fort Rickey served as a vital outpost during the French and Indian War, strategically located at the confluence of Wood Creek and Canada Creek, which comprised important early water navigation routes. Mr. Carmody will delve into the fort's history, strategic importance, and role in the region's colonial past. He is a respected researcher whose work provides new insights into the Mohawk Valley’s military history. The program will also highlight the recent awarding of a historic marker for Fort Rickey by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, a significant recognition of the site's historical value. Recorded October 2025.
