LIVE high-definition (HD) broadcast of the Greek Orthodox Matins/Orthros/Morning Prayers, and the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom commemorating the 15th Sunday of Luke, with Live Chat. Readings: Matins Gospel Reading: John 21:14-25 Epistle Reading: St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 7:26-28; 8:1-2 Gospel Reading: Luke 19:1-10 Today, we commemorate: 15th Sunday of Luke Gregory the Theologian, Archbishop of Constantinople Kastinos, Archbishop of Constantinople The Greek Orthodox Church commemorates the 15th Sunday of Luke, commonly known as Zacchaeus Sunday, because it serves as the final announcement that the season of Great Lent is approaching. The liturgical reading from Luke 19:1–10 tells the story of Zacchaeus, a wealthy but despised tax collector who climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus. This event is commemorated to emphasize the "desire for God" as the necessary first step of the spiritual journey. By looking at Zacchaeus, the Church teaches that no matter how "small of stature" one may be spiritually, or how burdened by sin, a sincere effort to seek Christ is met with His immediate and transformative love. Theologically, this Sunday is observed to highlight the power of repentance and restitution. Unlike a vague feeling of guilt, Zacchaeus’s repentance was active; he pledged to give half his goods to the poor and repay those he cheated fourfold. The Church uses this example to prepare the faithful for the upcoming fast by demonstrating that salvation enters a house—and a heart—when a person is willing to detach from worldly passions and right their wrongs. It marks the shift from the regular liturgical year into the pre-Lenten period, calling every believer to "make haste and come down" from their pride to receive Christ into their own lives.
