Rewilding Africa: Simalaha Community Conservancy

An ark of southern African animals has shipped into Simalaha Community Conservancy in Zambia, boosting wildlife numbers by 400 and promising further prosperity for the area. Over the past 3 months, Peace Parks Foundation, through generous funding from MAVA Foundation and the Dutch Postcode Lottery, translocated herds of 7 species - kudu, blue wildebeest, red lechwe, zebra , eland, giraffe and ostrich – from Namibian reserves to Simalaha. Simalaha’s first translocation took place in 2013, marking the start of a long-term initiative by Peace Parks, in support of and collaboration with the Sesheke and Sekute Chiefdoms whose combined land makes up the 180 000 ha Conservancy. Since then, more than 2 200 animals of 13 species in total have been reintroduced, with populations already surpassing 4 000 – well on the way to building a rewilding stronghold and filling a flagship protected area.
