The hatred of the Chinese government is directed specifically against the Uyghur minority living there. More than one million Uyghurs are being "re-educated" in Xinjiang in so-called vocational training centers. But behind the 15-meter-high walls, it is not re-education that is taking place, but a silent genocide. Many Uyghurs have fled into exile over the past 30 years. They rescued themselves to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, but also to Germany, where for example in Munich the largest Uyghur diaspora in Europe was established (about 800). In their new homeland they are now in an arduous process to make the crimes in Xinjiang internationally visible, to come to terms with losses and traumas, and to preserve their dwindling culture. The story of our main protagonist Gülzire Tashmamats is just one example of the many fates in exile. The now 36-year-old mother of two children drew attention to the situation in Xinjiang as a student in China as early as the mid-2000s. Fear of persecution drove her to Germany. But even in Munich, her struggle and thus her suffering did not end. She is still looking for her younger sister Gülgine, who is presumably being held in a Chinese internment camp. Gulgine studied computer science in Malaysia. Shortly after she decided to visit her parents in China, Gülzire never heard from her again and since then she has been fighting daily as an activist for a sign of life from her sister - but also for the preservation of her threatened culture. Nevertheless, besides her activism, she is of course also a mother and an independent personality with dreams, plans for the future and a longing for a carefree life that will never be possible in this way. Gülzire's everyday life is thus a difficult balancing act between fighting and letting go, waiting and starting over, between remembering and forgetting. "Against Silence" does not attempt to generate a statement of its own from what is shown, but rather approaches a complex subject with an open and non-judgmental view. This openness creates space for the viewers to form critical and reflective opinions. In this way, the film wants to help bring the suffering of the Uyghur women in exile to a broader social discourse.
