Odisha’s Wildlife Under Attack: Over 800 Animals Poached in 5 Years Odisha’s wildlife is facing a serious crisis. Between 2020 and 2025, 2,836 wild animals have died in the state, including elephants, tigers and other protected species. Shockingly, over 800 of these deaths were due to poaching. These figures were presented in the Odisha State Assembly by Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia, raising major concerns about wildlife protection in the state. But poaching is not the only threat. Electrocution from illegal electric fencing and live wires has also become a major cause of wildlife deaths. Wildlife trafficking continues to fuel a global black market where animal parts are sold for traditional medicine, luxury goods, ivory, horns and exotic pets. The Odisha government has allocated over ₹10 crore annually for anti-poaching squads and wildlife crime prevention. The state has also amended the Wildlife (Protection) (Odisha) Rules, 1974 to strengthen investigations. However, forest department data shows that while FIRs were filed against 6,348 accused, only 18 people have been convicted so far, raising serious questions about enforcement and prosecution.
