This video is the first of a two-parter about the exploration of the great steppes and Northern regions of Eurasia and North America as done by the two large steppe and prairie states of Russia and the United States. This first video will cover the Russian exploration as done by Vitus Bering as this was earlier than the American and brought the Russians all the way to Alaska. The second video will cover the Lewis and clark expedition to the Oacific coast of the Oregon territory following the Louisiana purchase. Thus these are the stories of how the Russians and Americans reached the Pacific. By the early 18th Century following the victory over Sweden in the Great Nordic War by 1721 Russian Zar Peter the Great had achieved acces to the Baltic Sea and thus opened up direct trade with Western Europe. Russian export trade at the time was heavily dominated by fur, while traditional wheat export to the south was blocked by bad relations with the Ottoman Empire. Peter the Great wanted to modernize Russia and to do this he needed currency and stability on Russia's Eastern flank. At the time Siberia was uncharted and he wanted it firmly under Russian control. Both to gain sea ports in the pacific and to acertain whether Sibiria was connected to America as the zar believed, but also to pacify the step herders that continuously threatened Russia's agricultural core. In 1724 the zar hired the Dane Vitus Bering, who like many other foreigners was employed in the Russian navy, to lead the first expedition through Siberia. His order was to journey to Kamtjatka in Eastern Siberia and built ships there to sail North to determine whether Asia and America were connected. A simple order but the execution was far from simple. Subscribe for more: / @leclubdaventuredoutre-mer
