Here we’ll discuss what is the backstory of this wine, what you should expect from it in terms of style, my tasting note’s highlights, food pairing suggestions and when to drink it. Let’s go. This is how the Anarchist Wine Company introduces itself: “We’re not talking hoodie wearing, molotov cocktail throwing anarchists. Anarchist Wine Co. is a nod to those with the foresight to observe the situation, the mindfulness to ask the question, the courage to take action and forge the outcome. These are the Anarchists we honor and our wines walk a similar path. Blending varietals not usually made together in traditional wine landscape.” Interesting, and intriguing, isn’t it? So, the grapes for this wine were sourced from the Dry Creek Valley AVA in Sonoma County just to the northwest of Healdsburg if you know this area. It’s considered one of the best terroirs in California for the Zinfandel grape variety but it’s also particularly suitable for the Syrah grape we talked about not long ago in our video series, because it’s a generously warm area. The climate here is influenced by the Pacific Ocean to the west and San Francisco Bay to the south, although the surrounding mountains isolates it a little. Warm days, protected from cool coastal breezes by the mountains, are tempered by afternoon southerlies that bring Sonoma's famous fog into the valley. A warm but not too warm area of Sonoma. The Anarchist red is a blend of Syrah 97%, Viognier 1%, Petite Sirah 1%, Petit Verdot 1% and only 197 cases of this wine were made, so you're one of the lucky few to have it! The wine’s label also has an interesting backstory. The Anarchist Wine Co. had an algorithm to generate design pattern, but, as they explain: quote “The algorithm made patterns, but this wine needed more. So, we wrestled down a list of our favorite anarchists; people spanning centuries and continents who shattered paradigms and changed the course of human history. We merged data from the lives of these anarchists with our algorithm and produced a unique piece of art, graphically expressing challenge to the status quo.” Very creative wine makers! What I enjoyed in this wine, is that the nose features captivating notes of juicy dark red cherry, working like fireworks with bursts of vanilla, dark cocoa, and a lifted chili-like spiciness, very peppery as is typical from Syrah. This is a dry and tannic red with a distinctive velvety texture. Tannins are soft but provide a granulous sensation. It’s literally bursting with flavors of blackberry jam and cherry liqueur, delicate tones of orange peel and cinnamon wood add a deepening dimension to the tasting experience. So, it combines the rich jammy berry fruit characters to the more savory feel of a herbal liqueur, so you can definitely sense the generous warm climate of the Dry Creek terroir but also the herbal freshness from the oceanic influences. This is a wine for richly-flavored dishes, the lasagna and gratins, the barbecues and generous roasts. It’s also very versatile as a red wine because it’s powerful and fruity, yet balanced and deep, a good balance sweet/savory in its flavor profile. It’s perfect to drink now as it is a 4-year-old wine already, not really a cellaring wine, but you can buy some, stock up and it’ll keep its power and fruit for 5 years with no problems.
