Finasteride is an androgen hormone inhibitor. It inhibits the steroid 5-alpha-reductase, thereby blocking the conversion of testosterone to 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone, which is a potent androgen. So Finasteride is used in the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia, and also used for male pattern baldness. It is available as 1 mg tablets, which is known as Propecia. and 5 mg tablets, which is known as Proscar. You may also find it in some topical solutions for hair regrowth. And the usual dose of Finasteride for benign prostatic hyperplasia is 5 mg/day. And for male pattern baldness, the usual dose is 1 mg/day.
