Shizuku Setup - • How to Install & Setup Shizuku Using Wirel... Video Description ~~~~~~ When the idea of implementing a firewall is talked about on Android, there's usually only a few options to look at You have the root method, where you can inject specific rules into your HOSTS file You have the VPN method. . .which does not require root access. . .but it does require you to filter your internet traffic through a self-hosted VPN Where you have the VPN itself configured with the HOSTS file And that's another great way of blocking internet access to an application as well. But just this morning, I came across a new project called ShizuWall and this developer really has done a nice job on this tool. Let me show you how it works Requirements As the name implies, the ShizuWall application requires the device to have Shizuku setup and running as a service. This is how the magic happens, because it's using Shizuku to issue certain ADB commands And it's those ADB commands that are able to block internet access to specific apps. So it makes sense that you will be required to install and setup Shizuku on your Android smartphone or tablet first. We can do this with Wireless ADB. . .so there isn't a computer required at all. But if you need help setting up Shizuku, then that's completely understandable It's a rather complex piece of software. Thankfully, I already have a dedicated video that can walk you through the process. So I'll have a link to that guide in the description below for those who need help getting Shizuku setup ShizuWall Setup Once you have Shizuku setup as a service, the rest is actually pretty straight forward. We download the APK file for ShizuWall directly from the GitHub website. You'll see there's an F-Droid version and a version for the Google Play Store. I downloaded the f-droid version since it was smaller. Sideload the APK file after it has been downloaded, and it will appear in your app drawer. When we launch the app, we're taken through a series of onboarding pages ShizuWall gives you a list of all the apps you have installed and you're supposed to come through here and add the ones to this firewall. . .which means internet access will be blocked to and from the selected apps. . .as long as the firewall stays active. I can give you a quick example with the Chrome application You can see the firewall is off and as a result. . .I'm able to refresh the website in chrome just as you would expect But when we go into ShizuWall Add the Chrome app And then enable the Firewall service Now, when we go back to the Chrome application and immediately, when I try to refresh the site. . .the app won't be able to accept that network data. . .so it won't be able to reload it. trying to visit a different website also confirms that access to the internet is cut off when using the ShizuWall application #android #androidapps #opensource As an Amazon associate, I may earn a commission on sales from the links below.
