The Haval success story in China and now in SA has been well documented. Sales in SA have been booming and the H2 and H6C models are becoming a common sight on our roads. The recipe of quality, high standard specification and exceptional value for money are winning the votes of the traditionally sceptical South African car buyer. The latest model to be added to the local range is the large SUV H9. This takes Haval into a completely new market segment with a large 7 seater vehicle that offers space, comfort, specification and even off-road ability with a 4 wheel drive platform. The test vehicle has been specially equipped for adventure use by Haval SA and fitted with a large Roof-tent and camping equipment in the boot area. Unfortunately, although I took the test car on a trip to the Groot Marico area to test both open road cruising as well as dirt and off-road ability, I did not use all the extra gear. We may not have spotted Herman Charles Bosman but the 4 wheel drive ability did enable us to find the source of some spring water in the foothills. Our venture along farm roads and into the foothills was handled with ease and aplomb, never requiring low range and handling anything that we threw at the vehicle. The 8 speed automatic gearbox is smooth and faultless in all circumstances. The camping gear fitted to this specific vehicle means that the vehicle is limited to a 5 seater, the extra 2 seats in the boot floor cannot be used. Also additional weight and aerodynamic interference would not apply to a standard H9. The non-standard off-road tyres plus the wind whistle from the roof-tent also did add to on road noise factors. Personally I did not mind some extra tyre noise but found the whistle more of a factor. TheH9 is powered by a 2L 4 cylinder turbo petrol motor giving 180kW and 350Nm. This is certainly sufficient to power the large and heavy vehicle but I believe that a diesel engine would be more suited to this application. A diesel would also help in the fuel consumption department, although due to the special nature of the test vehicle it’s unfair to look at the consumption that we achieved on this test. Haval have certainly packed the H9 with standard specification in our market. From the standard 4 wheel drive with selectable low range and terrain settings, full leather interior, infotainment screen with navigation and a standard panoramic sunroof. As with all models in the Haval range, the H9 is extremely competitively priced in the market segment especially when taking the standard specification and luxury levels into account. Currently priced at R599 900 this includes a 4 year/ 60 000km service plan. #Haval #HavalSouthAfrica #HavalH9 #LargeSUV #Large4wheeldriveSUV
