In this video, I’ll cover the insurance basics a commercial bakery should consider, including costs and the best way to get bakery insurance. Hi, I’m Gordon Coyle. Welcome to my channel, where we talk about the risk and insurance issues on the minds of business owners. These videos are intended to help decision makers become more informed insurance buyers. If I don’t answer the question that brought you here, reach out and let’s connect. Most bakeries need core coverages, including: • Property insurance (building if you own it, plus contents, inventory, machinery, and equipment) • General liability (including products liability) • Commercial auto (if you own, lease, or use autos in the business) • Workers’ compensation (required by your state) • Umbrella / excess liability for added protection Many smaller bakery operations can often place these coverages (except workers’ comp) in a BOP (business owner’s policy), which bundles multiple coverages into one policy. Larger bakeries are often moved into package policies and separate coverage placements designed for bigger operations. The cutoff between “small” and “large” varies by carrier, but many insurers use revenue as a key factor—often somewhere around $15M–$20M in annual revenue (depending on the insurance company). There are also additional coverages that may or may not be important depending on your bakery’s size and operations—we’ll cover those in future videos. So how do you get bakery insurance? Every bakery needs the core property and liability coverages, plus optional coverages depending on your circumstances and budget. The natural instinct is to Google it—especially if you’re buying for the first time, your premium increased, or you’re unhappy with service. The problem is that search results often lead to direct sellers and big-name insurance companies that dominate online rankings. If you contact them, you’ll usually get one quote (their quote) and limited personalization. For example, a major carrier might show up at the top of searches and sell directly—but you’ll likely receive only one option. A broker who represents that same carrier (and others) can often present multiple quotes, so you can compare real choices. In my view, buying without choices—or without a broker who can explain tradeoffs and recommend among several providers—is a big mistake. Another important question: what level of service do you want? Do you want a call-center experience, or do you want to work with an expert who understands your business and can help you structure coverage correctly? Bottom line: You can do the legwork yourself, gather multiple quotes online, and try to compare
