FREEDOM FIGHTER DUTTY BOUKMAN|JAMAICAN Dutty Boukman, a significant figure in Haitian history, was born around 1767 in the Senegambia region, now known as Senegal and Gambia. Initially a scholar well-versed in Islamic teachings, Boukman's life was dramatically altered when he was captured and forced into the brutal transatlantic slave trade. He was first taken to Jamaica and later to Saint-Domingue, which would become Haiti. The reason for his transfer to Saint-Domingue is debated: while some say it was due to his involvement in planning a rebellion in Jamaica, others believe it was because he was educating other slaves in literacy. Despite the exact reason, Boukman's journey was marked by resistance and a fight for freedom, shaping his legacy in Haitian history.
