Ilse Koch, known infamously as the “Witch of Buchenwald,” was one of the most notorious female Nazi war criminals during the Holocaust. Married to Karl-Otto Koch, the commander of the Buchenwald concentration camp, Ilse was accused of horrific acts, including torturing prisoners and using human skin to create objects like lampshades and book covers. Though never officially convicted for these specific crimes, she was sentenced to life imprisonment for her brutal role in the Nazi regime and later died by suicide in 1967. Her disturbing legacy has resurfaced through Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Netflix series, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, where Vicky Krieps portrays Ilse Koch. The show explores how real historical monsters inspired parts of its narrative. Krieps revealed that she found Ilse’s mix of vanity, cruelty, and delusion both terrifying and tragic, describing her as “a 1950s housewife who didn’t realize she was stepping over bodies.” Monster: The Ed Gein Story reimagines Ilse Koch’s story through a chilling yet stylized lens — bringing one of history’s darkest figures back into the cultural conversation.
