On the second day of Sweden’s Deaf Day event aboard a cruise ship, information booths and cultural activities were held. Visual Box, a Flemish deaf-led media company, attended to explore why Sweden excels in deaf media and culture. In Sweden, public broadcasters are legally required to produce content in Swedish Sign Language, often created by deaf individuals. This contrasts with Flanders, where interpreters are used in regular programming, and deaf-led content is rare. Sweden's programs, such as news and entertainment shows, provide job opportunities for deaf staff and appeal to both deaf and hearing audiences. Deaf-led media companies in Sweden, like Teckenbro, thrive due to strong community support, unlike Flanders, where trust in such companies is low. Sweden also legally supports deaf theatre, which integrates hearing actors to broaden its appeal. Visual Box aims to use these insights to improve deaf media and arts in Flanders, advocating for more content by and about deaf people, accessible to both deaf and hearing audiences.
