Blackberry in care, day 2 afternoon and evening. Blackberry is a skinny juvenile male Black Flying-Fox who was rescued after being trapped in a huge atrium courtyard area in a college residence. Whilst trapped, he was attacked by a black bird (probably a currawong) and had his skull and forehead horribly pecked. Bird peck injuries impart serious concussion injuries, and Blackberry is horribly concussed and miserable. His eyes are squidgy and squinty; he's a very unhappy little boy and is clearly in pain despite the analgesia. I took him to Lydia the vet to get his eyes sorted out; I don't think he's going to survive, but if he improves, I need to have his eyes sorted out and treatment commenced, so if he is a survivor he won't end up blind or with such limited vision that he won't be releasable. One eye looked like it had an hyphema (bleeding in to the anterior chamber of the eye secondary to blunt trauma) and he may have had lacerations or scratches or ulcerations on his corneas if he hadn't been blinking enough secondary to his head injury. Reduced blink reflex means his corneas can dry out and get gritty and ulcerate. His eyes were stained, and didn't show ulceration or scratches; we weren't sure about the hyphema (which could be minimal), but Lydia put in some atropine drops to dilate the pupils which reduces the pain and the chance of scarring. Tricky times. Following Blackberry's visit to Lydia he became progressively more neurologically compromised, but he kept drinking with relish so I allowed myself to hope he might be a survivor. Unfortunately he died overnight (not unexpectedly); all I could do was to give him good analgesia and fluids, and wait to see if his body could pull him through; it didn't. He was alive at 4 am but dead a few hours later. There is a warning screen between the video clips where he is alive, then the clip where I find him dead. The footage is not graphic or confronting, just sad. RIP Blackberry; gone too soon. Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult). https://tolgabathospital.org/donate/ Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me. If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me. IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt. The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie. Here’s Jenny’s email. jenny@tolgabathospital.org
