Ajmane Aliu, a mother of six children, is comforted by relatives and friends at the funeral of her husband, Ilmi Aliu. The man was a soldier with the ethnic Albanian rebels of the Kosovo Liberation Army, fighting for independence from Serbia. He had been shot the previous day while on patrol. Danya Smith American photographer Dayna Smith (Minot, North Dakota, 1962) earned a degree in communications from Kent State University, Ohio. Before coming to The Washington Post in 1985 as a staff photographer, she worked at the Palm Beach Post in Florida and the Washington Times. In 2007, after working for 21 years as a photographer, assignment editor and picture editor at the Washington Post, she became a freelancer and has been working for the paper and for other clients ever since. During her 30-year career, Dayna Smith travelled around the word to cover international conflicts and crises.
