How can we grasp what is meant by the equally vague and omnipresent concept of globalisation? Can globalisation be represented or depicted? Jameson assumes that it is not primarily an economic or political concept, but an example of ‘cognitive mapping’, i.e. a cognitive map that depicts or represents a multidimensional, highly complex reality. Jameson used two illustrative examples to explain what such a representation can look like: the British television series ‘Traffic’, which deals with the international illegal drug trade, and the scene and practices of international professional football. Fredric Jameson is one of the best-known literary theorists and most versatile Marxists in the USA. His topics: Literature, cinema, television, everyday culture, but also Marx reading, Adorno, Brecht, Hegel, etc. Perhaps best known are his critiques of postmodernism and the so-called cultural turn from the position of a committed cultural theorist.
