Come and explore as Surdo Prop provides a brief overview of the Chelsea Village area of Upper Wynberg in Cape Town's lush, tree-lined Southern Suburbs. About Chelsea Village: Nestled in the peaceful lanes of Wynberg, Cape Town, Chelsea Village offers a quaint, English village atmosphere, often referred to as Little Chelsea or Wynberg Village, a nod to London's iconic Chelsea district. The area is home to a striking collection of Cape Georgian buildings, some of the most densely packed in the country. Many of the shops lining the high street have been taken over by picture framers, antique stores, art galleries, and interior designers, with a few charming cafés serving a “ladies who lunch” vibe. Did you know? Wynberg was designated a Heritage conservation area in 1981, and since then, it has become one of the most desirable places to live in the Southern Suburbs. At the heart of the village lies the village square, which is actually an unassuming triangle. Surrounding it are one-way lanes designed to manage the traffic, especially the vehicles using Wolfe Street as a shortcut to avoid the afternoon congestion on Waterloo Road and Alphen Hill. Off the main lanes, you'll find quieter roads with picturesque cottages, townhouses, and larger period homes. At the edge of the village stands the historic Dutch Reformed Church, a monument that has stood since 1832. This church, along with the nearby St John’s Anglican Church (the oldest Anglican church in Cape Town), played a central role in the village’s early development. In fact, it was the Dutch Reformed Church that established a girls’ school in 1884, originally called the “School in the Bush,” which eventually became Wynberg Girls’ High School. It’s hard to imagine that Wynberg began as a farming area before transforming into a military base when British troops settled here. Its location halfway between Table Bay and Simonstown was strategic, offering a market for local farmers and sparing them the long trip into Cape Town. You can still spot remnants of the area's farming past, particularly the vineyards of the former Sonnebloem farm, now divided by the M3 highway. Just a stone’s throw away from Chelsea Village is Maynard Park, which features an open-air theatre and hosts the annual Shakespeare in the Park event.
