Finis Jhung 's Ballet Technique: Pas de Valse en tournant

At my annual Teacher Workshop this past August, teachers were taught to "Teach What Matters Most." They were given all the preparatory movements that lead to successful balances, turns, and jumps. Turning the waltz as you travel diagonally across the floor is a basic exercise that develops correct body positioning working the upper body, shoulders, arms, and head; improves balance and the flow of movement; and requires constant opposition throughout the entire body. The preparation for the pirouette en dehors requires the following elements: locking the pelvis for stability and balance; creating the preparatory demi-plié by gripping the floor with the supporting toes which connects the body to the floor and prepares the supporting leg to push down and turn; working the shoulder blades with the supporting arm reaching back while the leading arm makes the "S" curve which correctly places the body over the supporting toe and "times" and insures all the weight of the body reaches the supporting toe so that you will balance the turn; a final push of the supporting knee past the supporting toes. Toes push, eyes spot, arms close. The teachers who do all of this are more successful than those who don't. In any case, what is important to remember is that everyone can learn to turn. If we can go the moon and back, you can learn to waltz gracefully and turn successfully. You just have to learn the correct preparations and make sure you do them. It's like cooking a new dish: follow the recipe exactly, adding the ingredients in the correct order, and voila! you are an expert cook!
