It was produced by Esso, which serviced the cars during the race. Esso is a trading name for the oil and gas company ExxonMobil. The day/night race was administered by the British Automobile Racing Club and took place at the Goodwood Circuit in the United Kingdom. Located near Chichester in southern England, the 2.4-mile circuit encircles the Chichester / Goodwood Airport. The course's chicane, corners, and curves presented a challenge to drivers wishing to reach fast speeds while still maintaining control over the vehicle. This is a 9-hour race, drivers started at 3pm and finished in the dark at midnight. The first edition of the race occurred in 1952. Officials initially wondered whether cars or drivers could stand up to nine hours continuous driving round the somewhat tortuous track, so drivers split time in the cars for safety. In this race, Peter Walker and Dennis Poore finished first driving an Aston Martin DB3S. Titterington and Sanderson drove a Jaguar D-Type to second place and Collins & Brooks were in third place with an Aston Martin DB3S. It proved to be the event's nadir: small crowds at the 1953 edition and in 1955 (the year of this film), led to the unique event's demise. It was viewed as an experiment which had not quite come off, although it did serve as the forerunner to a series of Goodwood TTs run 1958-64. (01:51) The drivers hop into their cars and the race begins. (02:56) The cars race around the 2.4 mile track, including its famed chicane, as the crowds look on. (04:05) A car is evaluated for mechanical issues. (06:27) A car gets into an accident and authorities try to stop the fire (06:35) The race goes on nonetheless (06:58) The Ferrari makes a pit stop (10:40) Esso mechanics work at the pit stops (15:49) The lights turn on at the track as night falls (18:28) The clocks shows that 10 minutes remain (18:52) The checkered flag goes out at 12-o-clock exactly (19:01) Aston Martin finishes first, Jaguar second, and Aston Martin third (19:21) The victors celebrate Peter Walker proved a strong driver in most disciplines, but was most adept in sports cars, winning the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans race, and the Goodwood Nine-Hours in 1955. He effectively retired after a crash in 1956 left him with serious injuries. Roger Dennistoun Poore was a race driver, financier and entrepreneur. He became chairman of Norton Villiers Triumph (NVT) during the final years of the old British motorcycle industry. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
