In his recent, sweeping review of four centuries of western thought, Wootton catalogues what he sees as a significant shift from Aristotelian, religious, and morality-based ethics to a value system in which a person’s “virtue” is increasingly defined by their capacity to amass goods in the form of power, pleasure, and profit.
