DCSO School Bus Safety Initiative Update- Fall Semester of 2025 Purpose of Initiative: 1. Protecting the safety of children, in and around school buses. 2. Increasing driver awareness before, during and after school bus stops. 3. Driver education and enforcement. DCSO Education and Awareness Efforts Included: 1. DCSO YouTube Channel video. 2. Media press conference with school districts & AAA. 3. DCSO Facebook page video. 4. Sheriff Kalvin Barrett individual interviews with various news outlets. DCSO Fall 2025 Update Initiative Focus Areas: o The Dane County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) school bus safety initiative targeted violations including failure to stop, improper pass/turn, and illegal pass. o Citations are between $600- $1,300 plus a $200 school bus safety surcharge. o 4 driver’s license demerit points. Enforcement Methods: o Enforcement efforts included proactive deputy patrols, coordinated operations, and traffic violation complaint reports from school bus companies. Timeframe and Results: o From September 1, 2025, to December 2, 2025, there was a 460% increase in citations issued compared to the same period in 2024. Factors Contributing to Increase: o Enhanced communication, cooperation, and collaboration between the DCSO, school bus companies, and school district administrators. o Focused efforts on education, enforcement, and awareness. Time and Resources Utilized: o The initiative used patrol deputies, contract deputies, community deputies, the traffic enforcement team, and School Resource Deputies (SRD). o Nearly 30 total hours were dedicated by DCSO personnel. Enforcement Strategies: o A combination of individual and group enforcement operations was used. Geographic Coverage: o Coordinated operations covered the Town of Springfield, Town of Primrose, Town of Rutland, Town of Oregon, Dane, Town of Roxbury, Town of Berry, Town of Black Earth, Town of Dunn, and Town of Pleasant Springs, as well as, the Village of Brooklyn and the Village of Windsor. Future Plans: o DCSO efforts will continue during the spring 2026 semester. Overall Safety Philosophy: o Comprehensive safety in our schools starts when students are approaching the school bus stop and continues until they are in their homes.
