Social Media Summit@MIT: "Combatting Misinformation Online" Panel Discussion

David Rand (Moderator) – Professor, MIT Sloan and Research Lead, MIT IDE Kate Klonick – Associate Professor of Law, St. John’s University Tom Cunningham – Economist "Combatting Misinformation Online" There is widespread concern about false and misleading claims circulating on social media, as well as intense debate about whether and how platforms should take steps to combat it. In this panel, we will engage with these questions from social science, legal, and technology company perspectives. We will discuss what platforms can do to most effectively reduce the spread of misinformation, and what tradeoffs exist (e.g. with free speech) when making such decisions.
