Four-lined plant bugs are known for their large appetites. Just one plant bug may only cause cosmetic damage, but large enough infestations can devour leaves and kill plants. Four-lined plant bugs are small insects, growing up to around 7.5 millimeters in length. Their bodies are yellow to green in color with four black stripes running lengthwise along the wings. Nymphs are dark red in color with more oblong bodies that elongate and change color as they mature. Four-lined plant bugs are known to feed on over 250 plant species, which include herbaceous plants, trees, and shrubs. Both nymphs and adults feed on the upper surface of their host plant’s leaves. They’ll only eat the top layer of the leaf, leaving behind a spot of thin tissue before moving on. Damage anywhere else on the plant may indicate a different problem. In major infestations, prolonged activity may cause plant leaves to yellow, wilt, or curl. The first step to control is to prune away damaged leaves and stems. This limits adults from spreading and removes any eggs that may have been laid. Once you’ve gotten rid of any visible damage, you can apply a residual insecticide like Supreme I/T. Supreme I/T is a bifenthrin-based liquid insecticide concentrate that is labeled to treat over 70 different pests, including plant bugs. When applied, Supreme I/T will leave a residual chemical barrier that will control pests for up to 90 days after application. This product is a liquid concentrate, so it will need to be mixed with water before application. We recommend you use a handheld pump sprayer to make mixing and application quick and easy. To treat for plant bugs, you’ll apply this product at the labeled rate of 0.25 to 0.5 fluid ounces of product over 1,000 square feet. Use the higher rate for heavy infestations. We recommend you mix 1 gallon of finished solution for every 1,000 square feet of treatment area you have. Once your solution is evenly mixed, spray the tops and bottoms of foliage to the point of wet, but not runoff. Do not apply the solution to any plants grown for consumption. Wait until treated plants are completely dry before any irrigation can occur and before allowing children, people, or pets to come in contact.
