In this video, we’ll show you 4 easy and creative ways to decorate pottery using engobes (also called underglazes or colored slips) — a beautiful technique for adding color, contrast, and texture before glazing. ✨ What are engobes? Engobes are colored liquid clays applied to leather-hard ceramics. They allow for painting, stamping, pouring, and layering before firing — and give the surface a soft matte finish, even before glaze is added. 🎨 What’s in the tutorial: 1️⃣ Impressed elements: We cut decorative shapes (like flowers), color them with engobes, and press them into the clay using a rolling pin — creating embedded, colorful patterns. 2️⃣ Stencil painting: We place a paper stencil onto the surface, brush engobe over the entire area (including the stencil), and then remove it — revealing a sharp, clean design. 3️⃣ Repeated shape texture: We create small matching elements (in this case, circles), paint them with engobe, and roll them into the clay for a rhythmic, geometric look. 4️⃣ Wheel-thrown decoration: While the pottery wheel spins, we use a brush to paint concentric circles — this creates clean, modern decoration with natural flow. 5️⃣ Bonus: poured engobe technique: Using a pipette, we pour engobes directly onto the surface to create spontaneous, organic patterns. All techniques are done on Colorobbia Spanish white clay and fired twice: • Bisque firing after drying • Glaze firing after decorating This is one of our favorite processes — it allows for complete freedom in design while keeping the handmade character of the piece.
