Indiana Music History Project – Complete Oral History Interview with Rick Wilkerson Recorded September 17, 2025 at the Indiana Music History Project Museum, Indianapolis, IN The Indiana Music History Project (IMHP) presents the complete oral history interview with Rick Wilkerson—musician, record-store owner, and founder of the Indiana Entertainment Foundation and the Indiana Music History Project. In this full-length conversation, Rick explores his personal music journey in depth, tracing his path through Indiana’s underground music scenes of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Rick discusses his experiences performing with bands including Amoebas in Chaos, Red Square, and Tombstone Valentine, reflecting on songwriting, recording, and the realities of independent music during a formative era for Indiana’s new-wave and post-punk community. He shares stories from the regional scenes that shaped him as a musician, as well as the creative relationships and venues that defined that period of his life. Beyond performing, Rick talks about how record collecting and operating independent record stores—including Missing Link Records and Irvington Vinyl—expanded his understanding of Indiana’s musical past. Conversations with customers, musicians, and collectors revealed a depth of local music history that was largely undocumented, planting the seeds for his later work in preservation and storytelling. The interview also covers the long and often uncertain path toward founding the Indiana Music History Project, from early volunteer efforts and setbacks to the eventual creation of a permanent museum, archive, and oral history program. Throughout the conversation, Rick reflects on the importance of preserving first-person accounts and ensuring Indiana’s music stories are recorded while the people who lived them are still here to tell them.
