While driving alone from California to Bangor, Maine, Carrie Mitchel ignores the advice of a gas station attendant, Jimmy, to rest for the night and continues down a lonely road. She nearly hits a bloodied teenager, Amy Singer, who is wandering along the highway, and reluctantly gives her a ride. Amy explains that she and her friends from Boston University—Mike, Greg, Tammy, and Lisa—had traveled in an RV to Arrowhead to study the area for a course project. At a gas station, another attendant, Billy, warned them to steer clear of a local site ominously called "Devil's Playground."
