In the early Middle Ages Ireland was something of a melting pot, thanks to its monasteries which drew students from England and beyond. It sent out missionaries to the pagan peoples of Europe too. Among the most famous of these missionaries is St Willibrord, Apostle to the Frisians and patron saint of Luxembourg. He went on to great things, but his early training was in Rath Melsigi, which is now a simple field next to a quarry in Co. Carlow. Further learning: https://www.dib.ie/biography/willibro.... Acknowledgments: We are very grateful to Dermot Mulligan (Carlow County Museum) who kindly facilitated our visit to Clonmelsh. We are grateful also to Fr Thomas O'Byrne (Administrator, Carlow Cathedral) for granting us permission to film in Carlow Cathedral. #irelandsancienteast #loveireland #lovecarlow #historiccarlow #carlowhistory #treasureireland #christian #catholic #missionary #frisia #friesland #luxembourg #lëtzebuerg #netherlands #nederland #willibrord #conversion #saint Shot and edited by: Patrick Grant (linktr.ee/patrickgrant).
