Word salad dementia happens when a person with advanced dementia has difficulty communicating in complete sentences. Words are mixed up to make short sentences that may not make sense to caregivers or family members. For example, a person with dementia may say, eat the cow on the table, the purple thing upside down, apples, drink bicycle water, or various other short statements. A caregiver hearing these words may not know how to respond. Family members lacking dementia education may ask questions. The result of these interactions is that the person with dementia may become frustrated or anxious. If you have difficulty communicating with loved ones with dementia, caregiving expert Pamela D Wilson shares tips for how to respond when you have absolutely no idea what a person with dementia is saying. She also shares the importance of maintaining family relationships and social contact by learning non-verbal communication skills.
