AP Television footage showed some Russian convoys leaving their checkpoints at Igoeti to head towards Gori on Friday, the strategic battle-scarred town on Georgia's main east-west highway, south of the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali. Igoeti lies southeast of Gori. Earlier in the day Russian forces were seen holding their position at Igoeti, the day that both the president and defence minister had promised would end with a complete pullback from Georgian territory invaded nearly two weeks ago, though it seems likely Moscow will implement a buffer zone of sorts near South Ossetia. Despite Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's promise to have his troops out by now, Friday appeared to be yet another day of a Russian occupation with no clear end in sight. A top Russian general said on Thursday it could be 10 days before the bulk of the troops are gone, and the mixed signals from Moscow left Georgians worrying about Russia's intentions nearly a week after a cease-fire deal. Under the deal, Russian forces are to pull back to positions they held before intense fighting broke out August 7 in the Russian-backed Georgian separatist region of South Ossetia. Outside the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali, several ethnic Georgian villages were burning on Thursday - many days after fighting ended - and bore evidence of destruction from looting. Also, on Thursday the media were taken on a Kremlin organised facility from Gori to Tskhinvali which was designed to showcase the destruction caused by Georgian troops in and around the South Ossetian capital. The media were supervised at all times and were given only limited opportunity to film in Georgian villages. AP Television footage showed destroyed buildings on the outskirts of Tskhinvali. Residents in Tskhinvali complained of having no shelter.
