Do nZEB and Retrofit Buildings perform as expected?

This presentation was delivered at the 2022 Irish National nZEB and Retrofit Conference. It reports on the recorded performance of 25 low energy buildings, and compares the record performance with the theoretical Building Energy Rating (BER). The data suggests that on average, buildings are performing approximately one BER band below the expected performance. This is due to the following reasons: 1. Interior temperatures are higher than expected 2. Heating periods are longer than expected 3. Recorded overall heat loss was higher than the BER software predicted 4. The measured coefficient of performance of heat pumps are lower than the ratings indicated. The research indicates that industry needs to ensure that both the building fabric and heating systems perform as expected.
