It has a thin, long, and sharp yellow bill, a long S-shaped neck, and black legs and feet. During the breeding season, they grow delicate, wispy, ornamental feathers on their backs. Vocalisations: The call is a low, croaking noise. Breeding colonies make loud cackling and squawking sounds. Distribution: The great egret is a widespread species. They occur in sub-Saharan Africa, South America, the United States, southern Canada, and parts of Europe and Asia. Habitat: They are a water-dependent species occurring in both salt and fresh water habitats. They are typically found in the vicinity of streams, lakes, ponds, and tidal flats. Diet: Great egrets feed on, fish, amphibians, and insects, as well as small reptiles and mammals. The great egret uses its bill as a spear. It slowly stalks its prey through the water, or it stands still in shallow waters, ready to strike as they wait for their prey to move closer. Reproduction: Great egrets are colony nesters. They build large nests out of sticks high up in trees near the water. The nests are lined with softer plant material. Great egrets are thought to be seasonally monogamous. The male commences the nest construction while courting the female. The eggs are a blue-green colour, and there are typically up to six eggs in a clutch. The eggs are incubated by both sexes for about 25 days on average. Great egret nestlings fledge at around two months. In Society: The great egret became the symbol of the National Audubon Society following a sharp decline in population numbers at the end of the nineteenth century. This bird is featured on several currencies, including the 5-Reais Brazilian note and the $2 New Zealand coin. Conservation: North American populations faced a sharp decline during the nineteenth century as many birds were killed for the plume trade. Several conservation measures were put in place,s and numbers have since recovered. They are now a widespread species with an expanding range and are listed as least concern according to the IUCN.
