Did you know we have two professors at our Galveston campus who have a solution to save lives and protect the national economy from the effects of a hurricane? Drs. Sam Brody and Bill Merrell have devised something called the “Ike Dike,” also known as “the coastal spine.” The series of levies and enormous sea gates could protect neighborhoods and refineries on the Houston Ship Channel from a major hurricane. Their idea is inspired by the Dutch who know a thing or two about protecting lives and assets from Mother Nature.
