On March 19, 1969, sixty African American employees at a South Carolina hospital walked off their jobs. They were protesting the unfair firings of twelve co-workers who had protested low wages, discrimination, and verbal abuse on the job. Walter Reuther, UAW President at the time, said: “We offer you a hand in friendship, our hand in brotherhood and solidarity!” He then offered a check of $10,000 in support of their struggle. A state of emergency was declared with 1,000 state troopers and national guardsmen The strike ended on June 27, 1969, after a federal investigation found 37 civil rights violations. After the strike, all the employees were rehired with a pay increase and a newly instituted six-step grievance process. As UAW President Shawn Fain remarked recently: “It doesn’t matter what sector anyone is from; it doesn’t matter their background — you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us.” Our strength, as workers, is in our collective solidarity, across unions and across sectors! #UAW #solidarity #hospital #strike #southcarolina #charleston #walterreuther
