(10 Oct 2002) VOICED BY: VERA FRANKL Nassr/Taji Steel Fabrication and Military Production Facility, 25 kilometres north of Baghdad 0.00 Exterior of factory with media being escorted inside 0.13 Wide pan interior factory 0.20 SOUNDBITE: (English) Major General Hussan Ameen, Head of Iraqi National Monitoring Board: 0.36 Various of workers and machinery at factory Baghdad 0.59 Various of press conference with Abdul Tawab Mullah Hawaish, deputy prime minister: 1.08 Cutaway press 1.10 Various of men reading newspapers 1.20 Various of streets of capital VISION ENDS: 1.27 STORYLINE: US President George W. Bush's request for authority to use force against Iraq has drawn solid support in both the House and Senate. But progress has been slower on the diplomatic front, where three members of the U.N. Security Council, France, Russia and China, continued to hold out against a U.S.-British proposal sanctioning military action if Iraq does not comply with coercive inspections. Meanwhile, Iraq continues to defend itself against US claims it's developing weapons of mass destruction. 0.02 The Americans believe this steel and military production facility, north of Baghdad contains equipment that could support a nuclear programme. 0.09 Once again the Iraqi government opened the doors to the international press, in a bid to discredit the US claims. 0.16 The Iraqi government says it has nothing to hide. 0.20 SOUNDBITE: (English) Major General Hussan Ameen, Head of Iraqi National Monitoring Board: "This negative propaganda against this company maybe is a signal of the aggression Americans are talking about day and night. Perhaps this will put into consideration (show) the targeting of this." 0.37 The steel production plant is one of four sites bombed either in the Gulf War, or in the four days of US and British airstrikes that followed the withdrawal of UN inspectors in 1998. 0.48 The visit comes a day after US officials accused Iraq of building new structures over several former nuclear weapons research and development sites, and concealing them. 0.58 Iraqi officials, including the country's deputy prime minister, have repeatedly denied they are working on nuclear weapons. 1.08 The Iraqi government has also threatened to teach the United States an unforgettable lesson if Iraq is attacked. 1.14 The warning came as allied planes bombed radar and missile sites in the southern no-fly zone over Iraq, targeting President Saddam Hussein's air defenses for the third time this week.
