This webinar will offer insights into campus-based initiatives and community. Jodi Burshia and Shereena Baker will be sharing their work with the Albuquerque chapter of Sing Our Rivers Red. Their efforts focus on raising awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives that’s community-driven and rooted in education and prevention. They’ve hosted events at UNM, CNM, SIPI, and Highlands. Jodi and Shereena emphasize that building awareness, offering tools for safety, and fostering dialogue are vital forms of justice, especially when the formal justice system so often falls short. Jodi Burshia is Laguna Pueblo and Diné from her mother’s side and is Hunkpapa Lakota, Assiniboine and Sioux on her father’s side. She earned a doctoral degree with distinction from the University of New Mexico in 2021 and her BA and MA degrees from the University of Arizona. Her dissertation focused on understanding the experiences of Previously Incarcerated Indigenous Students in Tribal Colleges and Universities. Dr. Burshia has been a classroom educator since 2000 and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Indigenous Education in the Department of Teacher Education at New Mexico Highlands University. Previously, Jodi worked with the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute and the University of New Mexico. Shereena Baker (Southern Ute/Karuk) is the Project Assistant at the Institute for American Indian Education at the University of New Mexico. She assists in planning, publicizing, and coordinating IAIE events, supports the Native American Teacher Preparation Program with recruitment and programming, and maintains a database of Indigenous-centered curriculum projects and experts. Shereena is pursuing a Ph.D. in Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies at UNM. With a Master’s from the University of Kansas in Indigenous Studies and a Bachelor’s in American Indian Studies from Haskell Indian Nations University, she is dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for Indigenous communities through research, advocacy, and culturally sustaining initiatives.
